Nine Muses (나인뮤지스) is a seven-member South Korean girl group under Korean music label Star Empire Entertainment. The group made their official debut in August 2010 with the single “No Playboy” as well as the released of their first mini album, Let’s Have A Party.[1]

In late 2010/early 2011, the group went on hiatus to record their next comeback single/album. During this hiatus, the group again went on several changes of line-up. It has been said that for the past year, they’ve been undergoing intense training to improve both their physical and musical qualities, and as they have spent a long time preparing themselves, both music label and the group were confident in their new image.

[edit] History

[edit] Debut

Before their official debut, Nine Muses released a track for Prosecutor Princess’ OST called “Give Me”. The group was announced on March 26, 2010, after their maknae gained a lot of interest from the public when she appeared in the music video of label mates, ZE:A (another 9 member band from Star Empire Entertainment). It wasn’t until August 12, 2010, that Nine Muses made an official debut with the mini album “Let’s Have a Party”. The title track of the album being “No Playboy”, a song produced by composer Rainstone, and Park Jin Young. Nine Muses originally had 14 potential members. When the name of the group was announced, the company selected the nine members most ready to debut in the group.

Later into their debut, member Jaekyung left the group to focus on her modeling career and was replaced by Hyuna. In late 2010, the girls continued with follow-up promotions with the song “Ladies”.[2]

[edit] Nine Muses in a car accident

On September 8, 2010, it was reported that the members of Nine Muses has been involved in a car accident after they had left the Grand Carnival. The cause of the accident was that one of the tires of the van was replaced by a tire that was not the correct size, causing a loss of balance, which unfortunately caused the accident. All the members were taken to a hospital, where it was confirmed only five received minor injuries, though all were traumatized by the accident.[3] Following the accident, their company, Star Empire Entertainment suspended their activities briefly until they had all recovered.

[edit] Advances to Japan

In December 6, 2010, it was announced that the band was preparing to advance to Japan. They would perform on Seoul Train, which is an event in which K-pop artists and groups perform for their Japanese fans. On December 26, 2010, Nine Muses held a successful performance of six songs on Seoul Train alongside V.O.S. and ZE:A.[4]

[edit] 2011 – present: Line-up changes, Figaro and mini-album

It was confirmed on June 9 that the group would become a seven-member sub-unit. Star Empire Entertainment initially stated that Rana and Bini are still in the group, but are not participating in this round of promotions[5]. However, On August 11th, after months of hiatus, Star Empire announced Rana and Bini’s official departure from Nine Muses. The decision was mutual as Rana and Bini wanted to pursue individual activities. However, they are still signed with the company.[6] The new single titled “Figaro” was released on August 18th.[7] The girls recently added their eighth member Kyungri, who joins them for promotions for their soon to be released mini-album in December. The album is produced by Sweetune

[edit] History

[edit] Pre-debut

Around January 2009, rumors arose about DSP’s new girl group, RAINBOW, but it was not confirmed until the group was finally revealed on November 3, 2009. It was rumored to be composed of seven girls. DSP Media reportedly trained some members of the new band for four years.[1][2] In late October and early November DSP Media teased a new picture of Rainbow each day and then released a music video teaser for “Gossip Girl” on November 6, 2009.[3][4]

[edit] 2009: Debut with Gossip Girl

On November 3, 2009. DSP Entertainment reveals new girl group RAINBOW. DSP is already comparing Rainbow to Fin.K.L, stating, “The members of RAINBOW were picked so that their physical appearances wouldn’t be inferior to Fin.K.L”. As the teaser image suggests, the girls will already be coming out with an album upon their debut titled Gossip Girl.

On November 11, 2009, the music video for “Gossip Girl” was released. On November 12, 2009, the mini album was released which includes 5 songs.[5] On November 14, 2009, they debuted on Music Core with the group’s first single “Gossip Girl”.[6]

After the promotion of “Gossip Girl”, the girls began the promotion of “Not Your Girl”, which was a response to SS501‘s song “U R Man”

[edit] 2010: Group changes A, Mach and rise of popularity

In early August 2010, DSP Media released a single picture teasing the group’s impending comeback, they were seen wearing a plain white dress with weird eye shadows corresponding to their respective colors (in the Rainbow). The picture itself garnered much interest and after a few days their teaser was finally released. On the teaser, the girls were seen wearing two sets of outfits on two different backgrounds. The teaser garnered attention as well because of their sexy concept. On August 11, 2010, the full music video was released and 2 days later they had their first comeback stage on KBS’s Music Bank and had their succeeding comeback performances on MBC’s Music Core, and SBS’s Inkigayo respectively. After almost a month of promotions, they group’s “ab dance” not only became a hot topic but was also slammed with a lot of controversies and because of that sole reason, their promotions for “A” were halted indefinitely. They scheduled to have their debut stage performance on KBS Music Bank on August 13.

On October 17, 2010, DSP unleashed some of the girls’ concept photos for their impending comeback track after gaining popularity from “A” and 2 days later they released the full single plus all of the girls’ concept photos. On October 21, they had their first comeback stage on M.net’s M! Countdown and were followed by 3 more performances.

The girls of RAINBOW have been preparing to make their return to the music scene. For this comeback they’re changing up their image.

DSP Media disclosed, “They’ve only shown innocent and sexy sides. They will show an image that will be upgraded. They will transform into the sexy dominatrix image. With a touch of sexy, a hip retro-funk track and some tastefully provocative outfits, RAINBOW has been raising brows and getting much love for their single “Mach.” Promotions for “Mach” ended on November 14, 2010.

[edit] 2011: So Girls, Sweet Dream and Japanese debut

In April 2011, the girls released their second mini album “SO 女”. The title track, titled “To Me”, was released to promote the album, and has been charting high on many online music charts.

Embracing the lovely season of Spring for their overall concept, these members blossomed with an ultra-feminine image. For their album photos, they were snapped in white dresses against a field of flowers. However, the girls will be taking a more luxurious image for their title track, “To Me“, in order to better relay the song’s lyrics of exacting revenge on an untrue lover. Rainbow has teamed up with Japan’s Daishi Dance for their comeback title track, named “To Me“, and it has Daishi Dance’s trade mark. Some parts of the choreography were reportedly adapted from the international box office hit, “Black Swan“. RAINBOW incorporate some of the ballet moves in their performance, which is quite a difficult task to accomplish.

RAINBOW recently unleashed their mini-album “SO女“, and since the release, the girls have been doing well on various music charts.RAINBOW has just started to promote their album, but ‘To Me‘ has been entering the top 5 on many digital music websites already. On the Mnet music chart, RAINBOW is placed 4th, and on Melon, Soribada, and Daum, ‘To Me’ is placed in 2nd, proving the song’s great popularity.

On June 20, a 43-second teaser of RAINBOW’s “Sweet Dream” was uploaded onto DSP Media‘s YouTube channel. The full music video was released a day later.

The repackaged version of “SO 女” was released on June 22 and contains the new title track “Sweet Dream”, an acoustic version of “Kiss” from their Gossip Girl mini album, “To Me”, a club version of “To Me”, and an instrumental of “Sweet Dream”. On June 23 they will perform on Mnet’s “M! Countdown” for their comeback.

The “Sweet Dream” music video was filmed using a special motion control camera (MCC) worth $1 million USD. The camera allows for a natural meshing between the background and the girls even with different angles. The camera’s full potential can be seen in the scene where seven Woori’s appear on screen.

DSP Media explained, “We brought in special equipment like this to really emphasize the fantasy-like atmosphere of the music video.”

On September 7, RAINBOW topped Recochoku’s weekly download rankings for the short version of their Japanese “A” PV. The group held their first event at the Tokyo’s Ikebukuro district which drew an enthusiastic crowd of 2,000 fans. The girls performed “A” and had a 15-minute talk session.[7]

On September 14, RAINBOW released their debut single, “A”, which ranked #3 on Oricon‘s daily single chart with 10,141 copies sold.[8] The single includes a Japanese remake of their debut single, “Gossip Girl”, as well as a special DVD.

RAINBOW made their Japanese TV debut through the show Sukkiri, performing “A” and impressing the hosts with their Japanese skills.

Kara (Hangul: 카라, Japanese: カラ, often stylized as KARA) is a popular South Korean girl group signed with DSP Media (DSP). The band name Kara comes from the Greek Word “chara” (χαρά, lit. “joy”), which the group interpreted to mean “sweet melody”.[1]

Kara started as a four-member group and debuted with a “strong female” image through R&B style for their first album The First Blooming in 2007. In 2008, Kim Sunghee departed the group due to parental pressure, and two new members were brought in; as such, the group currently consists of five members: Park Gyuri, Han Seung-yeon, Nicole Jung, Goo Hara,[2]and Kang Jiyoung. The addition of the two new members also faced a change in the group’s original image to a “pretty but natural” appeal. The five-member band went on to achieve their first number one song with “Honey“.[3]

The group eventually made their debut in Japan in 2010. By the end of that year, Kara was dubbed as Japan’s #1 Rookie Artist of 2010 by Oricon and also received the New Artist Of The Year Award (International) from the Japan Gold Disc Awards. The group also released their first Japanese album, Girl’s Talk which was eventually certified as Platinum by the RIAJ. In February 2011, Kara’s “Jumping” and “Mister” singles received Platinum and double Platinum certificates, respectively, from RIAJ. In March, Kara became the first foreign female artist to top Oricon’s Composite DVD Chart [3] and the first foreign artist to top this chart for 2 consecutive weeks.[3] In April 2011 with their 3rd single “Jet Coaster Love“, Kara became the first foreign female group since the creation of the Oricon (43 years ago) to rank #1 in the 1st week of release and the first foreign female group in 30 years to rank #1 in the charts all together. They also hold the title as the first Korean girl group to top the Oricon Weekly Single Chart.[4] Their official fanclub is Kamilia, derived from a combination of the words “KARA” with the Latin word for family, “familia.” Kara’s official balloon color is pearl peach.

[edit] History

[edit] 2007: “Debut”

Kara debuted on March 29, 2007 with “Break It” on M! Countdown, from their first album The First Blooming.[5] Two music videos, “Break It” and “If U Wanna,” came from this album. Because of their similarity to Fin.K.L and the fact that both groups were signed to the same company, the two were often compared; in response, Kara stated that they regarded the comparison as beneficial and inspiring.[6] As the album was not a commercial success,[7] member Han Seungyeon participated in many TV variety shows in the following months to keep the group’s name recognizable to the public.[7]

[edit] 2008-2009: “Group image and line-up changes, rise of popularity”

The group was scheduled to have their comeback in March 2008 with their second album. However, Kim Sung-hee left the group suddenly due to parental pressure, as her participation in the group was contingent on the maintenance of her grades. In response, DSP stated that the second album would be shelved and replaced by a mini-album to come in May; in addition, two members would join the group. The two new members were eventually revealed to be Goo Hara and Kang Jiyoung. The group made their return in the music industry as a 5-member group on July 24, 2008 with “Rock U” on M! Countdown. They made their comeback with the “cute” and “playful” image which was the complete opposite of the group’s original image from their debut. In the same month, their first EP titled “Rock U” was also released. [8]

On November 29, 2008, DSP Entertainment released a teaser video for their upcoming single, “Pretty Girl“, which received over 40,000 hits within 12 hours.[9] The full video was released on December 2, 2008 online and was positively received by the public.[10] The EP was released on December 4,[9] embodying a “fun-party” concept.[10] The group began its comeback on all major music shows on December 4, 2008, starting with M.Net Countdown.[11] During their first national performance on KBS‘s Music Bank, member Goo Hara accidentally gasped “ah!” live on air due to slipping on falling confetti, and reportedly cried profusely afterwards.[12] The incident became a hot issue to many viewers, but Goo Hara received comfort instead of criticism from the general public.[13]

Park Gyuri attributed their popularity increase to their “pretty but natural” appeal,[14] while media reports gave credit to the band for finally finding its own identity in the music industry since group’s debut [15] and to older male fans, most notably singer Shin Hae-cheol.[16] Due to their increasingly hectic schedule as their popularity rose, a few of the group’s members were taken to the hospital on December 19 after a KBS Music Bank rehearsal for cold and exhaustion.[17]

Kara performing at the Hanyang University Festival, 2009

At the end of January 2009, DSP Entertainment announced that it would commence voting on January 28 at the group’s official website for the follow-up single to “Pretty Girl“, which ended on February 2.[18] By the deadline of February 2, “Honey” was the clear winner, with 60% of the votes.[18][19] The song was remixed from the original version, and also underwent a slight name change from “하니” (Ha-ni) to “Honey”,.[20] The group released the music video for “Honey” on February 16 and had their first live broadcasting comeback on KBS‘s Music Bank program on February 13, 2009; a repackaged mini-album followed on February 19 which featured remixed versions of songs from the group’s previous EP.[18][19] “Honey” became the group’s first #1 single when it topped the countdown the M.Net M! Countdown show. The song also won the “Mutizen” (“music netizen”) award on SBS‘s program The Music Trend.[21]

In June 2009 the group stated they would return in late July, with their concept upgraded.[22] The first teaser pictures of the group were then released in mid-July, showing radical changes in the group’s style and also saw a slight return of their “strong and mature” image previously seen from their debut.[23][24] Their single “Wanna” was released on July 28, 2009 and immediately charted on various digital music charts.[25] The music video was released on July 29, with the full album, Revolution, available online on July 30.[25] Comeback activities commenced on July 31, beginning with KBS‘s Music Bank; the group performed both “Wanna” and “Mister”.[26]Mister” proved to be popular with netizens due to the “butt dance” that is featured prominently in the choreography.[26][27] Due to the popularity of “Mister”, Kara’s overall popularity increased, evidenced by an influx of advertisement requests by various companies; in total, they had more advertisements in October 2009 than they had had the previous two years.[28] “Wanna” also became a #1 single for Kara and won the “Mutizen Song” award on August 30, 2009 from Inkigayo.[29] During promotions for Revolution, the group also performed internationally, including at Bangkok’s Parc Paragon.[30]

On December 14, it was reported that the group held a fan-meeting for their Japanese fans earlier that year on February marking the group’s first promotional tour in Japan. Over 3,000 fans were reportedly registered, exceeding the capacity of the venue which resulted in a second showcase.[31]

[edit] 2010: “Hiatus in South Korea, successful debut in Japan”

After a short hiatus, DSP Entertainment released two teaser photos of Kara’s comeback concept on February 9, 2010. The photos garnered a lot of interest because compared to their past album concepts, the new photos showed the members in dark outfits and smokey makeup that elicited a darker, more mature, and sexier feel. The next day, the album jacket was unveiled with a “Stealer” concept as well as the title track “Lupin“, which became #1 on several online music charts shortly after release. The teaser video was released on February 12 on Naver; the EP followed on February 17. Kara began their broadcasting comeback starting on M.Net’s M! Countdown on February 25, 2010.[32][33] The music video was released on February 22, garnering more than 90,000 views in the first 2 hours.[34] On March 4, 2010, Kara won their first #1 award for “Lupin” on M! Countdown.[35] On the following week, Kara won yet another #1 award on M! Countdown, making it their second consecutive win on the music program. “Lupin” also gave Kara their first #1 win on Music Bank on March 12, 2010, making it the group’s first win on this particular music show since their debut,[36] holding onto the position for three consecutive weeks.[37] The song also won the Mutizen award from Inkigayo,[38] and cumulatively Kara won an all-group best total of 6 awards during their “Lupin” promotional cycle.

The group was featured in a video message for a show called Arashi no Shukudai-kun (嵐の宿題くん, Arashi’s Homework?), hosted by Japanese idol group Arashi.[39] Kara held fan meetings on May 8 with more than 8,000 fans at Japan’s Grand Prince Hotel. In addition, Kara had an official Japan fan club meeting with 3,000 fans at Yokohama’s Mina Torimirai hotel on May 9. The group later on signed with Universal Music Japan and made their official debut in Japan by August with “Mister“.[40][41] The single ranked in various music charts which proved it to be very popular in Japan. The group later on released their second single entitled “Jumpin’” on November 10, 2010. The song quickly climbed up in other charts including mobile downloads.[42][43] On September 29, 2010, Kara released their best hits album, “Kara Best 2007-2010“. The album is a compilation of their selected Korean tracks since they debuted. It ranked #2 in the Oricon Daily Chart on the first day of release, selling 18,223 copies.[44] It was announced on November 3, 2010 that the album was certified gold by The Recording Industry Association of Japan (RIAJ), making KARA the first ever Korean Group since the ’90s to release an all-Korean album that is able break the 100k copies barrier in Japan.[45] Their debut Japanese album, “Girl’s Talk“, was released on November 24, 2010. It sold 107,000 copies in its first week and ranked number 2 in the Oricon weekly charts, making this the first album by a non-Japanese Asian girl group in Japan in 6 years and 9 months to sell more than 100,000 album copies in its first week.[46] The album received a platinum certification from RIAJ on January 14, 2011.[47]

In October the band represented Korea and performed at the 7th Asia Song Festival, organised by Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange, at the Seoul Olympic Stadium.[48]

After about 9 months hiatus in Korean Music industry, Kara announced the release of their next single “Jumping” which will be promoted in both Korea and Japan. It was released as Kara’s 2nd Japanese single and title track for their fourth Korean mini album. Despite promoting the song at the same time, Kara had 2 different concepts for the song in Korea and Japan.[49] A teaser photo of Jumping’s album cover was released on November 3, 2010 and according to a company official, “Kara’s new album utilizes the optical art concept of black and white geometric patterns, which differs depending on each member’s physical characteristics and image.” He added, “You will see a new and upgraded Kara with these modern, yet chic images.”[50] Kara made their comeback with Burn and Jumping on MBC Music Core on November 20, 2010. On December 10, 2010, Kara got their second #1 win on KBS Music Bank for Jumping.[51] Two days after their win in Music Bank, Kara won a #1 Mutizen Award for “Jumping” on SBS Inkigayo’s 600th episode.[52]

After a very successful year of debuting in Japan despite their long absence in the Korean music industry, Kara was chosen as the best rookie artist according to a popular Japanese mobile ringtone site, Recochoku. On December 20, 2010, Oricon also announced Kara as 2010’s best rookie artist, generating revenue to some 1.3 billion yen (or $15.4 million USD[53]); and with a total of 493,000 copies of their releases sold this year.[54]

[edit] 2011-present: Rise of popularity in Japan, return to South Korea and 2nd Japanese album

On February 23, Kara released a DVD called “Kara Best Clips” which is a compilation of their past music videos. After one week, Kara was able to set another record when they ranked #1 in the Oricon’s Weekly Composite DVD Ranking. This made them the first ever foreign artist to be #1 for two consecutive weeks since the charts implementation in 1999. Kara has sold approximately 230,183 copies of their DVD.[3]

On April 6, Kara released their third Japanese single, “Jet Coaster Love“, after the original release date was pushed back due to the 2011 Great Tohoku Earthquake and tsunami. As soon as it was released onto the music charts, “Jet Coaster Love” instantly rose to #2 on the Oricon Daily Chart with 47,810 copies sold. Kara was able to set another record as “Jet Coaster Love” maintained its position and ranked #1 in Oricon’s 4/18 Weekly Single Ranking selling 123,000 copies in its first week. Despite its success, plans for promotion in Japan were hindered due to the natural disaster. Instead, the group announced that all proceeds from the single will be donated to Japan’s natural disaster relief aid.[55]

On August 4, the group officially announced that they will be releasing their third official album on mid-September and will resume their activities in South Korea for the first time in over six months. According to industry representatives, the group has used some of their spare time recording songs for the album while they were busy promoting their fourth Japanese single, “Go Go Summer!” which was certified gold by the RIAJ and has topped various charts in Japan. However, the group will only promote in Korea for about three weeks as they have many things scheduled in Japan.

On August 22, their agency DSP Media announced their third Korean full-length album, titled “Step“, is slated for release on September 6.[56][57]

On September 16, their Japanese agency Universal Sigma announced the group’s fifth Japanese single called “Winter Magic“, released digitally in October 12 and physically on October 19.[58] The single ranked #3 in Oricon’s Weekly singles chart with around 79,000 copies sold on the first week.

On October 25, DSP Media revealed the group’s second Japanese album called “Super Girl(Japanese: スーパーガール), slated to release in November 23. The album will include the latest 3 singles: “Jet Coaster Love”, “Go Go Summer” and “Winter Magic”.[59]

On November 21, DSP Media revealed that sales of KARA’s Japanese album “Girl’s Talk” had exceeded 500,000 copies in the region. In addition, sales of KARA’s second Japanese album, “Super Girl“, had surpassed 360,000 based on preorders alone.[60]

Officials said, “Kara shows a sophisticated image on stage while outside the stage, they show a friendly image” [70] On October 28, 2010, it was confirmed that Kara was chosen as the new models of one of the three biggest Carrier companies in Japan, “KDDI”, showing their popularity.[71] Starting November 1, Kara would promote the “Au Santa Letter of Challenge”, organized by the “Au Smart Sports Run&Walk”, the group members will dress up in Santa Claus costumes, offering the users gifts with various contents. [edit] Controversy

[edit] Request for contract termination

On January 19, 2011, a lawyer representing four of the five Kara members announced to the media that they would be terminating their contract with DSP Entertainment, effective immediately; a lawsuit was also filed on their behalf.[77] Park Gyuri, the leader of the group, was the only one remaining with the management company. In a statement, the lawyer representing the four stated that “the company repeatedly denied any requests and unilaterally forced tasks upon the members”, and that they have been preparing for legal action for two months.[77] Later that day, it was announced that Goo Hara would discontinue her involvement with the suit and has rejoined the company,[78] as she apparently was not fully aware of the lawsuit’s details.[79] In a statement, DSP Entertainment firmly rebutted all accusations, also stating that they wished to resolve the issues and reconcile with the members quickly.[80] DSP also denied earlier reports of denying Kara members their fair share of profits, stating that each member was paid 300,000,000 for their work.[81]

The lawyer for the three remaining members released another statement giving further details of their allegations. Their representatives stated that they were misinformed regarding their Japanese promotions, and that their relationship with the company severely deteriorated with the hospitalization of CEO Lee Ho-yeon in March 2010.[82]

On April 28, 2011, the dispute between DSP Entertainment and Kara’s 3 members (Han Seung-yeon, Nicole Jung, Kang Ji-young) was resolved.[83]

T-ara (Korean: 티아라, Japanese: ティアラ, often stylized as T-ARA or T♔ARA) is a South Korean girl group formed by Core Contents Media in 2009. Before their debut, there was a high level of interest in the group as they were called “Super Rookies” and had been training for three years prior to debut.[1]

Originally a five-member group, they released their first song “Good Person” for the soundtrack of the Korean drama Cinderella Man in April 2009. In June 2009, members Jiwon and Jiae left the group, delaying the group’s debut. The next month, T-ara regrouped to become a six-member group with the addition of Boram, Qri, and Soyeon, and released their debut single “거짓말” (“Lies”).[2]

In July 2010, T-ara introduced a new member, Ryu Hwayoung, to become a seven-member group.[3] T-ara uses a rotating leader system, and has a different member of the group elected as leader each year, in order to give both the group and the individual members the opportunity to grow in a new direction.[4]

In 2011, T-ara signed a $4.3 million contract with management company J-ROCK for their Japanese debut, the highest out of all the girl groups debuting in Japan.[5] Their major record label is EMI Music Japan while their management and promotional marketing takes place under J-ROCK.[6] The group’s first single, a remake of their 2009 hit “Bo Peep Bo Peep“, debuted at #1 on the Oricon weekly charts with 49,712 copies sold,[7] the first for a foreign group and an international female artist ever in history.[8]

History

Pre-debut

The original five T-ara members were trained for three years, and released their first song “좋은 사람” (Good Person) for the Korean drama Cinderella Man soundtrack. In early 2009, Jiyeon was in a collaboration with SeeYa and Davichi for project single called “여성시대” (Women’s Generation).[citation needed]

In June 2009, Core Contents Media announced that Jiae and Jiwon left due to differences in music style. Soyeon, Boram and Qri were added. Later, it was revealed that Soyeon was originally cast to be a part of Girls’ Generation (SNSD), but six months prior to her debut Soyeon withdrew from the group due to personal circumstances. Her stint away from the music industry was relatively short as she quickly joined T-ara following open auditions to replace the departing members.[9] The group’s agency released promotional pictures in July 2009 in accordance with the new members. Afterward, T-ara released their debut single “거짓말” (Lies).

2009: Debut and Absolute First Album

T-ara made its debut on MBC‘s Radio Star talk show on July 29, 2009.[10] The music video was released that day. Their first performance was on Mnet’s M! Countdown show, where they performed “Lies” and “Wanna Play?”. Their debut was looked upon negatively by webpostings, where people stated that it was lipsynched and commented that it seemed like an elementary school performance.[11] The group announced afterward that future performances would be live.[12] A few members of T-ara (Eunjung, Soyeon, Hyomin and Jiyeon) were in a project group with Supernova, a six member male group for the digital single, TTL (Time to Love). The single TTL became the members first number 1 as it topped many of the online charts. On December 1, 2009, T-ara released their first full-length album, named Absolute First Album. The album had two lead singles, “Bo Peep Bo Peep” and “Like The First Time”, both with music videos.

2010: Breaking Heart and Temptastic

On January 1, 2010, T-ara’s single “Bo Peep Bo Peep” won an award on the New Year’s Day episode of Music Bank. Two days later, they won the Mutizen award on Inkigayo. The following week, T-ara won their second consecutive Music Bank and Mutizen awards. The following week, T-ara won their third consecutive mutizen award (Triple Crown).

T-ara performing “I Go Crazy Because of You” at the Mnet 20’s Choice Awards

Later in the month, Core Contents Media announced that Eunjung and Hyomin would take part, alongside label mates SeeYa and Davichi, in project group, ‘Wonder Woman’. Consequently, the T-ara announced promotions for their follow up single, “Like The First Time” (Korean: “처음처럼”). Promotions ended quickly as member Soyeon was diagnosed with H1N1.[13]

In February, the group announced the release of a repackaged version of their debut album, titled Breaking Heart. The music video for its lead single, “I Go Crazy Because of You” (Korean: “너 때문에 미쳐”), was released on February 24, 2010. The group performed their debut stage on Mnet’s M!Countdown. After promotions for “I Go Crazy Because of You”, T-ara promoted the next single off the repackaged album titled “I’m Really Hurt” (Korean: “내가 너무 아파”).

On November 23, 2010, a music video for their song “Why Are You Being Like This” (Korean: “왜 이러니”) was revealed.[14]

On December 1, 2010, T-ara released their Temptastic album in digital format. The music video for their title track, “Yayaya“, was revealed on the same day. The album’s physical release was delayed until December 3 due to the bombardment of Yeonpyeong in November.[15] The group held their first comeback stage through KBS’s Music Bank on December 3 and began promotions with their new 7th member, Hwayoung, and a new leader, Boram. T-ara received two consecutive wins for “Why Are You Being Like This” and “Yayaya” on Mnet M! Countdown on December 9, 2010 and December 16, 2010 respectively.

2011-present: Japanese debut, John Travolta Wannabe and Black Eyes

In June 2011, it was announced that T-ara would be making a comeback with the title track “Roly Poly” on July 1, 2011.[16] It was also announced that the group would be advancing into the Japanese market with a showcase on July 5.[17] As of June 14, 2011, Core Contents Media has announced that Hyomin shall be taking over the leadership for this album and for their Japanese promotions.[18] They further explained saying, “In order to instill a sense of responsibility in each of the members, we have decided to change the leader for each new album release. We will be passing the leader role onto members who have not been leader yet. The reason Eunjung was leader during their debut was because she and Hyomin had trained the longest with T-ara, and we felt that she would be the best fit”. They continued, “Likewise, Hyomin has been chosen for T-ara’s Japanese and ‘Roly-Poly’ promotions for the same reasons as Eunjung. We have made this decision after much discussions with both the members and our agency.”

T-ara performing “Roly-Poly” at the 2011 MTV Cyworld Music Festival

T-ara’s “Roly-Poly” music video and song was released on June 29 and reached #1 on Cyworld, GomTV, Bugs, Nate and Mnet real-time charts just after an hour.

On August 2011, T-ara released Roly-Poly in Copacabana. The song was named after “Copacabana” popularized in the 80’s in Jongno disco clubs. The new version shows T-ara’s new Eurodance moves and with the upgrade of the rhythm makes this version perfect for summer vacation songs.

T-ara released their debut Japanese single “Bo Peep Bo Peep” on September 28, which debuted at #1 on Oricon’s daily single chart with 20,068 sold on its first day of release.[19] The single is coupled with a Japanese remake of their song “I Go Crazy Because of You”.[20] The single also tops the Oricon’s weekly single chart with 49,712 copies sold in the first week,[21] a debut record for a Korean female pop group.

In September, it was announced that T-ara would be making a comeback in November. The album will contain a similar electronic sound to that of Absolute First Album and Breaking Heart. A 30-minute music video will be released in Early November which will have a drama-like storyline and a 1 billion won production budget.[22]

T-ara’s second Japanese single is a remake of “Yayaya” from their Temptastic mini-album, which was released on November 30.[23]

On November 9, 2011, T-ara released the track and music video for their comeback song “Cry Cry”. The 15-minute drama music video is part 1 of a longer story, which will be followed up with part 2 on December 24 with the music video for their upcoming song “Lovey-Dovey”. “Cry Cry” starred T-ara’s maknae Jiyeon and actor Cha Seung Won, along with others. “Cry Cry” hit #1 on various Korean charts including Gaon and Naver.[24] T-ara’s third mini album Black Eyes was released digitally on November 11, due to the overwhelming demand for “Cry Cry”.[25] The album was physically released on November 18, which charted at #1 on Hanteo and #2 on Gaon’s weekly album charts. Two additional music videos for “Cry Cry” were filmed, a dance version which was revealed on November 18 and a ballad version on November 21.

Core Contents Media announced on December 7 that T-ara’s 3rd leader Hyomin will be passing on her leadership to Soyeon. Soyeon was picked because of her “big personality”, position as main vocalist of the group and her responsibility. She will be leading T-ara with a strong image as follow-up promotions for their song “Lovey-Dovey” will be starting on January 1, 2012.[26]

Endorsements

Even before their debut, T-ara had been getting many proposals for endorsements ranging from sweets, beverages, apparel, cosmetics, and communications.

In October 2009, The group signed a contract for their first commercial-film with Nonghyup Apples. They recorded the song “Apple Song” especially for the CF, which was later included and retitled as “Apple is A” on the group’s debut studio album Absolute First Album.[27]

In 2010, the group modeled for such companies as Mentholatum Korea,[28] Tedin Water Parks,[29] and Olypmus cameras.[30] T-ara was chosen to model for Tedin Waterpark again in 2011.[31]

The group opened their own online shopping mall “T-ara Dot Com” in March 2010. The girls had planned the concept and the setup of the shopping mall, including choosing the models and styling as well as handling the sales of the online transactions. A reality show of the same name was centered behind the business.

T-ara had launched their own café franchise called “Cafe Page One” that will expand into a chain of 500 nation-wide stores. The name of their cafe was influenced from the cafe that member Eunjung ran in her drama ” Coffee House“. “Cafe Page One” was opened on July 1, 2011, where the girls were present to greet the customers.[32]

In 2011, T-ara earned 3 billion won ($2.7 million) in the span of 3 months from modelling in commercial-flims for sports brand Spris, electronics brand iRiver, software company Windysoft, optical store Look Optical, instant noodles brand Shin Ramyun, Crown Mountain and many others.[33]

In July. the group had been chosen as the new advertisement models for cosmetics brand Tony Moly, which is high regonized by teens and women in their 30s and 40s. T-ara is expected to model for the brand in not only South Korea, but China, Japan, and other Asian countries as well.[34]

T-ara will be the first idol group to sign a contract with online shopping mall Hi-Mart. Actors advertised for the company in the past because they were able to appeal to adults and older ages, while T-ara was selected because they are “able to appeal to all people, mainly between the ages of 10-60.”[35]

Debuting in early 2007, they became popular in the fall of that year with the song “Tell Me.”[3] They have scored five consecutive #1 hit singles: “Tell Me“, “So Hot“, “Nobody“, “2 Different Tears” and “Be My Baby“.[4] In 2008, they won two Daesangs (“Artist of the Year” Awards).[5][6]

The group began their entry into the American market in 2009, with the English version of their hit single “Nobody“.

They are co-managed in the United States by JYP Entertainment and Jonas Group.[7]

[edit] History

[edit] 2007–2008: Debut, The Wonder Begins, and The Wonder Years

As a group, the Wonder Girls is introduced through the program called MTV Wonder Girls which was filmed and directed by MTV. The first four episodes outlined the characteristics and profiles of each member and showcased their schedules for the day. Shortly after selecting Yeeun as the fifth member, the Wonder Girls had their first showcase in the MTV Studio. For the showcase, they performed a cover of “Don’t Cha” by the Pussycat Dolls as well as their own songs, including “Irony” and “미안한 마음” (“It’s Not Love“). Sunye performed a solo act by singing her cover of Destiny’s Child‘s “Stand Up for Love“, while Hyuna performed solo through a showcase of her dancing skills. The other three members — Yeeun, Sunmi and Sohee — performed a cover of Janet Jackson‘s “Together Again“.

The Wonder Girls officially debuted in early 2007 on MBC‘s 쇼! 음악 중심 (“Show! Music Core“), singing “Irony”, the hip-hop single from their debut mini-album, The Wonder Begins. The mini-album sold 11,454 physical copies in 2007.[8] The Wonder Girls official fanclub was established, with the name of “Wonderful”. Additionally, the group held several showcases in China after receiving Chinese lessons.[9] Throughout the rest of 2007, however, members of the Wonder Girls were beset by various injuries and health problems. On June 25, Sohee was sidelined for a month after tearing a knee ligament in a fall from a running motorcycle during the filming of her movie, 뜨거운 것이 좋아 (“I Like It Hot“).[10] The remaining four members continued performing until late July, when Hyuna was withdrawn from the group by her parents due to their concern over her problems with chronic gastroenteritis and fainting spells.[3] In the autumn of 2007, Good Entertainment, the talent agency sent their trainee Yubin to JYP Entertainment as a replacement for Hyuna. She made her debut three days later in the group’s live performance of “Tell Me” on Music Bank.[11]

Their first full-length album, The Wonder Years, was released the following week with “Tell Me“. Due to the last-minute addition of Yubin, the album version does not contain her part. However, the performance version of the song was reworked to include a bridge with rapping by Yubin. The single was a hit and reached number one on various Korean television and internet music charts, including KBS‘s Music Bank.[citation needed] The choreography for the song was simple and widely imitated: by October, many fan performances of the dance circulated on video sharing sites such as YouTube and Daum,[12] including one by a group of policemen who were eventually profiled on SBS‘s Star King. The dance’s popularity was immense and the explosive attention it received became widely known as the “Tell Me Virus”, earning the group the title of ‘Korea’s Little Sisters’.[citation needed] Videos of the dance came from fans in the Philippines and as far away as France, and the song also earned the Number One spot in Thailand.[3]

The Wonder Girls had an extensive promotional schedule for their album and in late 2007 they began performing their second single, “이 바보” (“This Fool”). They made numerous appearances on variety and game shows, sang live on radio shows, at music festivals, on music programs, and in special joint performances with other groups such as Big Bang and Girls’ Generation. MTV has also aired four seasons of The Wonder Life, a reality TV series starring the girls. The Wonder Girls returned to Korea in spring of 2008. In May, a picture of each member was released over a period of five days, starting with Yeeun and ending with Sohee. A preview track from the upcoming single was then released. There were rumours that past member Hyuna would be returning to the group; JYP Entertainment however confirmed the story was untrue.[13] Their new single, “So Hot“, was released on May 22, 2008; the song topped online charts soon after.[14][15] They then performed in mid-2008 on MBC‘s Show! Music Core, performing “So Hot” and “This Time”. The full single was released soon after containing the title track, the rap version of “Tell Me“, “This Time”, and “You’re Out”. Due to a vocal cord injury, Yubin temporarily lip-synched her parts under doctor’s orders.[15]

Wonder Girls performing “Nobody” at the 2008 BICHE opening ceremony in October.

After a very brief hiatus, the Wonder Girls made a comeback in early fall of 2008. The full music video for “Nobody” was revealed, and the single was digitally released simultaneously. They performed the following weekend on Show! Music Core, Music Bank, and Inkigayo. The song went to #1 on KBSMusic Bank, staying there for four consecutive weeks,[16] and also won Cyworld‘s “Song of the Month” award in September and October 2008.[17] Like “Tell Me“, “Nobody” also sparked a dance craze.[18]

At the 2008 MNet KM Music Festival Awards, the Wonder Girls took home three awards, including the highly-desired “Song of the Year” award, as well as “Best Music Video” for “Nobody“, and “Best Female Group”.[6] The group also won an award at the 2008 Golden Disk Awards a month later for high digital sales.[19] At the 18th Seoul Music Awards, the Wonder Girls won the Daesang (“Artist of the Year” award), the highest award offered, for “Nobody“, along with two other awards.[5]

In February 2008, the Wonder Girls joined their producer Park Jin-young for his month-long concert tour through Korea and the United States (including New York City and Los Angeles) as special guests, and took the opportunity to film the music video for “Wishing on a Star” while in New York City.[20] Park had stated that the concerts were also meant to be a showcase for his other protégés, such as Min, G-Soul, and Lim Jeong Hee.[21] They were also selected as a top girl group by Virgin Media, which put them amidst the popular girl groups Pussycat Dolls, Girls Aloud, and Danity Kane.[22]

In October 2008, the Wonder Girls were signed by the Creative Artists Agency (CAA).[23] By the end of 2008, the Wonder Girls had earned 12 billion (equivalent to $9 million US) as a group.[24]

[edit] 2009: American debut

The Wonder Girls tour started on February 28, 2009 in Bangkok, Thailand. The Wonder Girls, along with mentor JYP, then held concerts in the United States, visiting Los Angeles on March 5, La Mirada on March 6, and New York City on March 8.[25] They also performed for a small crowd at MTV Iggy on March 10. The group then returned to South Korea, holding concerts in late March in Seoul and Busan.[26] This tour was documented in the M.net reality show Welcome to Wonderland.

After the end of the tour, the Wonder Girls debuted a music video for “Now”, a cover of Fin.K.L‘s single from their third album. They also created a commercial for LG, with a version featuring only the dance was released online on April 9, 2009.[27] The Wonder Girls also started their official MySpace Music account.[4] The page confirmed that the group would launch in the United States with the official release of an English version of “Nobody” in the summer of 2009.

In June 2009, JYP Entertainment announced that the Wonder Girls would be joining the Jonas Brothers on the North American leg of the Jonas Brothers World Tour 2009.[28] The company also announced that “Nobody” would be the first English single, followed by “Tell Me“,[28] and that an English album would be forthcoming.[29] It was later revealed that in order to concentrate on their American debut, both Sohee and Sunmi dropped out of high school.[30][31]

The Wonder Girls released an English version of their single “Nobody” on June 26, 2009, just one day before the start of their tour with the Jonas Brothers. The Wonder Girls were initially signed on for 13 concert dates across the US, but they were eventually given the opportunity to join the Jonas Brothers for a total of 45 concert dates.[32] “Nobody” eventually made a debut on the Billboard Hot 100 in October 2009, making the group the first Korean group to ever enter the chart.[33][34] The song also went on to top the Taiwan and Hong Kong music chart.[35]

[edit] 2010: Line-up changes, International tour, and Television Series

On January 22, 2010, it was announced that Sunmi would be postponing her musical career to pursue an academic career and that Hyerim (Lim), a JYP trainee, would take her place.[36][37] Sunmi continued as a member of the Wonder Girls through the month of February in order to complete scheduled events.

The Wonder Girls had been preparing their debut English album, with half (six tracks) to consist of English versions of Korean singles and the other half of brand new material, initially scheduled for release in February 2010.[38] They were also planning to have a headlining tour in January 2010;[38] however, due to the departure of Sunmi, plans for both the tour and the album were delayed.[39]

Due to the popularity of the group in Asia and worldwide, the electronics brand Sony Ericsson chose the girls to be the ambassadors of Sony Ericsson in the Asia Pacific Region which will see promotional activities in South Korea, China, Japan, Singapore, Indonesia, Taiwan as well as Australia and New Zealand. After the announcement, the girls flew to Singapore where they held a press meeting performing their songs “So Hot”, “Tell Me” and “Nobody”.[40]

On April 5, 2010, the Wonder Girls announced a 20-show tour of the US and Canada, the Wonder World Tour, which will include fellow label mates 2PM who will be joining them for 9 confirmed dates in Washington DC, Atlanta, New York, Chicago, Houston, Dallas, Los Angeles, Anaheim and San Francisco in conjunction with Live Nation,[41] with other dates yet to be confirmed. The tour is a combination of the English and Korean versions of their hits, covers of popular English-language song, and their new songs from their upcoming album, as stated by Yeeun during their Ustream webchat with fans on April 17, 2010.[42] The first leg of the tour began in Washington, D.C. on June 4, 2010.

On May 1, the Wonder Girls performed at the Korean Music Festival at the Hollywood Bowl.[43]

The Wonder Girls followed up their tour announcement with the unveiling of the newest single/EP, titled 2 Different Tears. The title track was recorded in three different languages: Chinese, Korean and English. The music video for 2 Different Tears premiered on YouTube on May 15, 2010; it was shot in the Gyeonggi-do province of South Korea. The music video features Park Jin-Young and Korean-American comedian Bobby Lee. There are three versions of the music video : Korean, English and Chinese.[44] Their album was released on the same day.

Between May 15, 2010 and May 31, 2010, the Wonder Girls returned to South Korea to promote the Korean version of 2 Different Tears. They had their comeback TV performance starting from M.Net’s M! Countdown on May 22, 2010. On May 27, 2010, the Wonder Girls won their first #1 award for “2 Different Tears” on M! Countdown. The group wrapped up their last week of promotional activities in South Korea by performing on MBC’s Music Core on May 29, 2010. During this two-week period, the Wonder Girls also appeared on several Korean variety and talk shows, including KBS‘s Win Win and Happy Together, as well as SBS‘s Family Outing 2 and MBC‘s Come to Play.

In May 2010, eight more US cities and two Canadian cities were added to the second leg of the Wonder World Tour. In addition, it was announced that label mates, 2AM, would open for the Wonder Girls in San Francisco, San Diego, Las Vegas, Englewood, CO, Atlanta, and Chicago.[45] During this time, the Wonder Girls’ American promotional activities continued to earn them recognition: popular concert venue House of Blues named them “Artist of the Month” for June 2010[46] while online concert authority Pollstar featured them in a special article titled “The Wonders of K-pop”.[47]

On July 29, MTV Korea premiered a new Season of Wonder Girls, MTV Wonder Girls (Season 4), that introduces the Wonder Girls’ everyday life in the United States, such as at their New York home and studio, and preparations for the upcoming MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia 2010.[48] The MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia 2010 was held at the Sunway Lagoon Surf Beach on July 31. The show has been broadcast on August 21 on MTV Asia.[49]

On July 30, M.net premiered a new show Made in Wonder Girls that take the viewers behind the scenes of the Wonder Girls their first American tour, Wonder World Tour, as well as their promotions in Singapore and Indonesia.[50]

On August 3, the Wonder Girls performed in Singapore’s SINGfest 2010 at Fort Canning Park.[51] On September 3 The Wonder Girls Performed On Seattle For Aion.[52]

Despite having only two weeks of promotion in Korea of “2 Different Tears” after their two year hiatus, the group ranked highly in the end of the year charts. In Gaon Chart, in all four charts : 2010 Top 100 Album Sales, 2010 Digital Comprehensive Top 100, 2010 Top 100 Download, 2010 Stream Top 100. [edit] 2011: Official American debut album and return with Wonder World

In January, more info was released about the American album. JYP Entertainment’s CEO Park Jin Young (JYP) hinted on his Twitter account he wrote a new song for the girls while recording in his drama “Dream High“.[54] He later tweeted that he is not the only producer for this album.[55] In addition to this, Rainstone (Rhee Woo Seok) of JYP Entertainment, the songwriter behind the Wonder Girls’ international hit, “Nobody“, stated that the album was expected to have six to seven tracks. The girls are flying back and forth from South Korea and New York to record the songs. Well known producer Rodney ‘Darkchild’ Jerkins and Grammy-nominated singer-songwriter Claude Kelly were revealed to be heavily participating in the album. Also, the album will be released by one of the three major labels of America.[56] With the information released of the new album, the girls tweeted photos of recording with Claude Kelly in the studio.[57][58]

In February, Chinese distributor ‘Starsing Records’ unveiled the best-selling albums for 2010, which included American artists like Lady Gaga, Taylor Swift, but also for the Wonder Girls “Special Edition” album.[59][60]

During the 2011 Chloe Fashion Show in Shanghai, China, the girls held several interviews. Leader Sunye said it is unclear if they will add their Mandarin songs to the new album and it’s possible for Mandarin album for their Chinese fans. Yeeun said she’s interested in composing songs for this album. Yubin stated that they will be going for a bolder approach, in addition to that, they said that shall indeed raise the stakes in their dance music, but still have elements of retro.[61][62][63]

On April 6, on SBS Power FM’s ‘Kim Hee Chul’s Young Street‘, Sunye hinted at a Wonder Girls comeback in Korea. When asked about the Wonder Girls’ activities by a listener, she stated, “Although we are not promoting in Korea right now, I’m very proud that K-Pop is being spread [around the world]. So I have a greater desire to promote our group in Korea as well as to see our fans who’ve waited for a long time. I think there will be some good news later this year.” She added, “For our fans who have waited for us, we’ll be sure to see you all soon with good music before the year ends. Please cheer us on.”[64]

On June 30, it was announced on their official website that the girls were invited to perform at the 2011 Special Olympics closing ceremonies in Athens, Greece. They performed the traditional Korean folk song “Arirang” along with their hit singles “Nobody” sung in English and “Tell Me” sung in Korean. The performance was held on July 4.

Sohee was in the August issue of Nylon Korea for a pictorial and interview, which was released on July 17. JYP Nation once again returned with concerts “JYP Nation in Japan 2011” at Saitama Super Arena on August 17 and 18, this time with fellow labelmates 2AM who were unable to attend last year due to a clash with their own concert tour.[65][66]

In the beginning of Summer 2011, it was falsely reported on several fan websites that the Wonder Girls would be performing the US national anthem as well as a new song from their upcoming album at the New York Mets game.[67] As stated on the official Wonder Girls website, CEO Park Jin Young explained the false events to fans in a news announcement: “Unfortunately, Wonder Girls are not scheduled to be at the Mets game. In addition, the Wonder Girls’ new song release will officially be announced by JYP Entertainment through all official Wonder Girls websites when the official date is determined.”[68]

On August 5th, The Wonder Girls were featured on Billboard.com’s “Mashup Monday” program, performing a self-arranged cover of B.O.B. and Bruno Mars’ “Nothin’ On You”. Sun said that, “We just want to express our love to our fans…It’s a perfect song.” Meanwhile, Yenny continued to explain in the subsequent interview that, “The first thing was arranging the instruments. I started practicing piano and then we added two more guitarists. And later a percussionist joined. And also we were traveling a lot, so we couldn’t stay at one place. We had to practice on the street on the way.” Yeeun played piano and sang the chorus with Sunye and Sohee, while Hyerim and Yubin rapped the verses.[69] On October 09, 2011 a representative revealed , “The album will be produced in a movie OST format. We’ll be planning our concept to fit around the feel of the song, so as opposed to retro, we feel that it will be more pop. The Wonder Girls will definitely be coming out with a new image, so please look forward to it.” [70].

Girls’ Generation (Korean: 소녀시대; Sonyeo Shidae) is a nine-member South Korean pop[1][2] girl group formed by S.M. Entertainment in 2007. They are also referred to as SoShi (소시) or SNSD, both abbreviated forms of the group’s Korean name. The group is currently the top Korean girl band.[3]

Girls’ Generation has released three Korean full albums, three Korean mini-albums, one Japanese full album and various singles. Their 2009 hit single “Gee” holds the record for being the longest running No. 1 song on KBS Music Bank, having held the No. 1 chart ranking for nine consecutive weeks. Gee was named song of the decade by the Korean music site, Melon.[4] The group also won various awards in 2009 and 2010, including consecutive Artist of the Year (Daesang) awards at the Seoul Music Awards, Golden Disk Awards, Melon Music Awards, and the Korean Cultural Entertainment Awards.

The group began a foray into the Japanese music scene in late 2010 under Nayutawave Records, a part of Universal Music, with the Japanese remakes of their 2009 Korean hits “Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)” and “Gee“.

The leader of the group is Kim Taeyeon. The other members are Jessica Jung, Lee Soon Kyu (Sunny), Stephanie Hwang (Tiffany), Kim Hyoyeon, Kwon Yuri, Choi Sooyoung, Im Yoona and Seo Joo Hyun.

Career

2007–2008: Debut and Girls’ Generation

In July 2007, Girls’ Generation had their unofficial first stage performance on Mnet School of Rock where the group performed their first single, titled “Into the New World” (다시 만난 세계, Dasi Mannan Segye). A documentary recording the story of the group’s debut titled Mnet Girls’ Generation Goes to School was filmed during this time, showing the members as they moved into an apartment together and prepared for their performances. The group’s first single was physically released soon after, including an instrumental of the group’s debut song and two other tracks: “Beginning” and “Perfect for You”. The latter’s Korean title is “Wish” (소원, SoWon), which later became the name of Girls’ Generation’s official fan club, S♡NE. The group’s debut officially began on August 5, 2007, first performing on SBS Inkigayo and then later on MBC Music Core and KBS Music Bank. “Into the New World” achieved No.1 spot on M! Countdown.

The group released their first self-titled full album in late autumn of 2007 with the lead single “Girls’ Generation” (소녀시대, Sonyeo Sidae), a remake of Lee Seung-cheol‘s 1989 song. Promotion for the single started in early November. The album also included the group’s first single “Into the New World“, “Perfect For You” (re-titled “Honey”), and eight other tracks by the group. In early 2008, Girls’ Generation began promoting their second single from the album, “Kissing You“, which won the group their first K-chart win after getting the number one position on the KBS Music Bank February chart.[5]

In March 2008, the album was repackaged, re-released and re-titled Baby Baby. A third single, “Baby Baby”, was released to promote the album. During the group’s promotions, members Jessica, Tiffany and Seohyun were also featured on a mini-album released by Roommate, a one-man band from Purple Communication. The mini-album was titled Roommate: Emotional Band Aid, and was released on December 1, 2008. The song performed by the three girls, titled “Oppa Nappa” (오빠 나빠; literally, Bad Brother), was digitally released before the album in April 2008. The song was performed live on SBS Inkigayo, KBS Music Bank and M! Countdown some time later.[6][7] Later in the year the three members released “Mabinogi” (It’s Fantastic!) together as the theme song for the Nexon game Mabinogi, with Tiffany participating in the music video.[8]

Mnet reality show Factory Girl chronicled the members working as interns at fashion magazine Elle Girl.[9] The articles the group worked on were featured in the Korean Elle Girl magazine. The program began airing in early October.[10] In late 2008, the group also participated in the SM Town Live ’08 concert along with other SM Town artists.

2009: Gee, Genie and rising popularity

On December 26, 2008, posters of the Girls’ Generation members wearing roller-skates were posted up in various locations around Seoul. SM Entertainment’s phone lines were blocked up by callers asking whether the posters were for sale and the company asked fans to stop taking the posters down for personal use.[11] On December 29, the group’s management stated that the posters were indeed teaser posters and that the group would soon release their first EP, Gee, in January 2009.[12]

A teaser video was released in January 2009 and the first single “Gee” released soon after. “Gee” topped Cyworld‘s hourly music chart on the release day.[13] The song also went No.1 on all major digital music charts within two days.[14] The music video set a record on release, garnering 1 million views on GomTV in under a day.[15]

The group began its album promotion in January 2009 on MBC Music Core where they sang their new lead single “Gee” and the track “Himnae (Way To Go)”, another song from their mini-album.[16] “Gee” went on to become a phenomenal hit, breaking the record for consecutive No.1 wins on Music Bank with 9 consecutive wins, as well as receiving a triple crown on SBS Inkigayo. The track also showed strength on other charts, topping the Mujikon, Melon and Mnet charts for 8 consecutive weeks, the Dosirak chart for 7 weeks, the Muse chart for 6 weeks and the Baksu chart for 4 weeks.[17][18]

After a short break, SM Entertainment announced that the group would be back with a new mini-album sporting a “Marine Girl” concept. The new single was to be titled “Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)” (소원을 말해봐 (Genie); literally, “Tell Me Your Wish (Genie)”); with the full mini-album being released digitally on June 22, 2009.[19][20] The group started their promotional activities on June 26, 2009, appearing on KBS Music Bank.[21] The performance was followed by follow-up comeback performances on MBC Music Core and SBS Inkigayo on June 27 and 28, 2009. The physical release of Genie was delayed by SM Entertainment in order to redo the album art, and was released 4 days later on June 29, 2009.[19]

The track proved to be a success as it conquered various music sites, including Melon, Dosirak, Mnet, and Bugs, and it was No.1 on the weekly charts and SKT ringtone weekly charts of the first week of July.[22] The mini-album sold an estimated 50,000+ copies in its first week after released (almost double the numbers from the first-week sales of Gee), an unusual feat for any Korean girl group.[23]

2010: Oh!/Run Devil Run, Japanese debut and Hoot

Later in January, SM Entertainment confirmed the release of Oh!, the group’s second full-length album to be released on January 28.[24] The lead single “Oh!“, was digitally released on January 25 with the music video being released two days later.[25] On January 30, the group started promotions with the recording of MBC Music Core.[26] The broadcast of the performance experienced a blackout near the end, to which MBC made the whole performance available online in response.[27] With ‘Oh!’, the group went on to win 5 consecutive K-charts on KBS Music Bank, as well as achieving a triple crown on SBS Inkigayo.[28] ‘Oh!’ also went on to win the Music Bank half-year K-chart, coming in at 2nd on Hanteo’s first half album sales chart,[29] and also winning the end-of-year K-chart.[citation needed] The music video became ranked as the number one most viewed YouTube video in Korea by the end of 2010. It was also No.1 in Hong Kong and made the top 10 in both the Taiwan and Japan rankings.[30]

Starting from March 11, 2010, photos of the members were released online showcasing a dark concept, dubbed “Black SoShi”.[31] A teaser video was released on March 16, with the new single Run Devil Run being released as a digital single on March 17.

Mid-June, it was announced that the group had signed contracts in May, and would begin working under Universal Music Japan’s record label Nayutawave Records for their Japanese promotions, with their first Japanese single expected to be released in September 2010.[32][33][34] Girls’ Generation began promotion in Japan in August. “少女時代到来~初来日記念盤~” (Girls’ Generation’s Arrival ~ First Time in Japan Commemoration Disc ~), a DVD featuring seven of the group’s music videos as well as special bonus footage was released on August 11, with the special edition of the DVD containing a pink glowstick as well as a pass to the Girls’ Generation debut at the Tokyo Ariake Colliseum on August 25.[35] In the first week after release, the DVD sold 23,000 copies, making No.4 on the weekly DVD Oricon ranking and No.3 on the weekly music DVD ranking,[36] making Girls’ Generation the first female k-pop group to make the Oricon DVD Top-5 ranking.[37] The sales for the group’s first photobook, “少女” (So Nyuh) were estimated to at 1.6 billion won even before release.[38]

Amidst their Japanese activities, the group also participated in the SMTown Live ’10 World Tour alongside their label-mates on August 21 at Seoul Jamsil Olympic Stadium.[39] They participated in the subsequent Shanghai, Los Angeles, Paris and Tokyo stops as well.[40]

On August 25, the group held their first showcase in Tokyo Ariake Colliseum.[41] With an initial 10,000 fans invited, it was reported to be the most large-scale plan for a Korean artist debuting in Japan.[35] However, due to high number of expected attendees, the group’s management announced that the showcase would take place three times in the same day rather than once to accommodate the estimated 20,000 fans.[42] The group sang 5 of their Korean tracks at each of the showcases, and the total number of attendees over all three shows were estimated to be at least 22,000.[43] At this showcase, the Genie Japanese music video was also revealed publicly for the first time, the teaser having been released a few days prior on August 20.[44]

Their Japanese debut single “Genie” debuted at the No.5 spot on the same day of its release on the Daily Oricon Charts and later rose to the No.2 position on the Daily Charts some time later, earning the group a No.4 position on the Oricon weekly ranking.[45][46][47] The group also hit the number No.1 spots on Japan iTunes’ music video chart and both the Rekochoku daily video clip chart and incoming movie daily ranking chart a day later.[48] With pre-orders amounting to 80,000, the single sold an estimated 45,000 copies in the first week after release.[49][50] On October 20, 2010, the group released their second Japanese single, “Gee“.[51][52]

A week after the release of their Japanese single, the group released their third Korean mini-album, Hoot on October 27, 2010, consisting of five tracks.[53] The video for lead single, “Hoot“, a song originally written in English as “Bulletproof”, was released on October 28.[54][55] Girls’ Generation commenced their promotional activities with a comeback stage on KBS Music Bank on October 29.[56] “Hoot” quickly rose to the top of the charts and received the No.1 spot numerous times on music shows, proving to be another successful release for the group.[57][58][59][60] The group simultaneously promoted “Hoot” and “Gee” in Korea and Japan respectively, participating in Japanese music broadcasts such as the FNS Music Festival, where they performed their two Japanese singles, “Gee” and “Genie” on December 4.

On December 22, 2010, “Hoot” was repackaged with additional tracks from previous albums and released in Japan. The release rose to the No.2 position on the Oricon charts and selling 21,000 copies on the first day, faring surprisingly well considering that all the included tracks were entirely in Korean.[61]

On December 9, 2010, the group attended the Golden Disk Awards, being awarded three awards including the Disk Daesang (Album of the Year) for their 2nd album Oh!. The group also became the first ever girl group to have both a Disk Daesang (2010)and Digital Daesang (2009). On December 15, 2010, the group attended the Melon Music Awards winning the Best Dressed Singer award, Hot Trend Song award for their latest song, “Hoot”, as well as the Artist of the Year award. This would be the 2nd consecutive ‘Artist of the Year’ award for the group. They topped the Hanteo annual Singer Award chart for 2010.[62]

They were named on Asia Today’s list of 50 Korean power leaders for 2011 at the No.44 spot, being the only idol group from the list.[63] Girls’ Generation was designated “Artist of the Year” by Dosirak, Soribada, Korea Gallup, Hanteo and Sport Korea and also won Best Song of The Year with “Oh!” at Monkey 3.[64][65]

2011: Mr. Taxi, Girls’ Generation and The Boys

Hoot was certified Gold by Record Industry Association of Japan.[66] At the start of 2011, the group prepared a new song titled “Visual Dreams”, as part of their endorsement efforts for Intel‘s Core Processors throughout Asia.[67] The music video for “Visual Dreams” was released on January 17, and various promotional campaigns included new music, 2D and 3D music videos, internet sites, photos, and PC store displays.[68]

In latter half of January, it was announced that the group would be returning to the Japanese market through the release of their Japanese version of “Run Devil Run” as a digital single, scheduled for release on January 25, 2011.[69]

On January 20, at the 20th Seoul Music Awards, the group received an Artist of the Year award, a Bonsang prize, a Popularity award and a Hallyu award. In doing this, Girls’ Generation became one of four artists in Korean music history (the others being Seo Taiji, Jo Sungmo and H.O.T.) to win two consecutive Artist of the Year awards at the Seoul Music Awards. The group also became the only girl group in history to receive Artist of the Year awards for Seoul Music Awards, and Melon Music Awards for two consecutive years. They also received two Daesang Awards at the Golden Disk Ceremony, one Digital Daesang (2009), and one Physical Album Sales Daesang (2010).[70]

On March 8, SM Japan updated their official website with information about the release of Girls’ Generation third Japanese single and their first Japanese tour. It was stated that on April 27, Girls’ Generation would be releasing their third Japanese single MR. TAXI / Run Devil Run, which would include their first original Japanese song “MR. TAXI“.[71] and the Japanese remake of their song “Run Devil Run“. A portion of the revenue from their Japanese single MR. TAXI / Run Devil Run would be donated to Japan’s Red Cross in order to provide assistance to the victims of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.[72] On April 9, the Japanese music video of “Run Devil Run” was released.

It was also announced that the group would embark on a Japan-wide tour titled The 1st Japan Arena Tour which would start at Osaka on May 31. A total of 14 concerts in 6 cities would be held over a period of one and a half months.[73]

At the 2011 MTV Video Music Aid Japan (VMAJ), Girls’ Generation were nominated for three awards under the “Best Group Video”, “Best Video Of The Year” and “Best Karaokee! Song” categories.[74] Originally titled MTV Video Music Awards Japan (VMAJ), the title of the event was changed to change the focus of the show to aid Japan, with donations tied to the amount of votes for artistes.[75] Girls’ Generation performed two songs at the event, joining the star-studded line up alongside world-famous artistes such as Tokio Hotel, Lady Gaga and AKB48.[76] On July 2, it was announced that they had come out top in two out of the three nominated categories, winning “Best Group Video” and “Best Karaokee! Song” for the Japanese version of “GENIE“.[77]

On June 1, 2011, they released their first full-length original Japanese studio album Girls’ Generation. This album contains 12 songs including the singles “Genie”, “Gee”, “Run Devil Run”, “MR. TAXI” and a Japanese version of “Hoot”.[78]

Girls’ Generation was certified Platinum (250,000) by Recording Industry Association of Japan on June 14, 2011, making it the fifth Korean artist’s album to do so after S.E.S, BoA, TVXQ and KARA. Girls’ Generation then was certified Double Platinum (500,000) on July 8, 2011, a first for any Korean girl group.[79][80] The group also set a record for “recording the highest sales of the FIRST album as a foreign artist in Japan. Girls’ Generation is the fourth artist to obtained number 1 spot on weekly album chart after BoA, TVXQ and Big Bang,”[81] and became the third Korean artist to surpass the 500,000 mark after BoA and TVXQ. As a result of their rising popularity, Girls’ Generation became the highest earning foreign artist in Japan for the first half of 2011.[82] Girls’ Generation has sold over 629,436 copies, making it the highest selling album by a Korean group in Oricon history, surpassing a record previously held by labelmate TVXQ, and now holds the 5th spot for best selling albums of 2011 in Japan according to Oricon.

Recently, the group has been in the midst of their second Asia Tour. They held their first two concerts in Seoul on July 23 and 24, followed by concerts in Taipei, Taiwan on September 9, 10 and 11, and then continue onto Singapore on December 9.

On August 21, 2011 The 1st Asia Tour: Into The New World DVD reached the No.1 spot in Japan’s “Tower Records” being the highest selling DVD between August 15-21st.[83]

Girls’ Generation was designated by SISA Press as “The Most Influential Entertainers in Korea” for the year 2011, after having placed 6th in the 2010 ranking.[84]

On September 26, 2011 the first teaser featuring Taeyeon was released for the impending comeback with the group’s 3rd Korean album The Boys, followed by Sunny & Hyoyeon on September 27; Jessica, Sooyoung and Tiffany on September 28 and Yoona, Yuri, and Seohyun on September 29. The first image teaser for “The Boys” was released on the midnight of October 1, 2011 through SM Entertainment’s YouTube channel.[85]

Girls’ Generation were originally scheduled to release the third album The Boys through iTunes worldwide and through various music websites in Asia including Korea on October 5, 2011. As of September 30, the album’s release has been postponed so as to bring about a worldwide album release, with details to be released as soon as they are confirmed.[86][87] On October 10, it was confirmed that the album will be released on October 19, 2011 and comeback on KBS Music Bank on October 21, 2011.[88]

Setting their sights on the international market, Girls’ Generation signed a contract with Universal Music Group under Interscope Records in 2011.[89]

The title track, “The Boys”, was released in both Korean and English. It was written, composed and arranged by Teddy Riley, who was Michael Jackson’s producer.[90]

After a few minutes after “The Boys” released, Girls’ Generation cleared (across the air) the “all-kill” status on many online music charts with their single “The Boys”, on top.

On 21st October, Girls’ Generation began their promotion of “The Boys” on KBS Music Bank with “The Boys” and “MR. Taxi (Korean ver.)”. It is already confirmed that Girls’ Generation will release “The Boys” maxi single (mini album) internationally on November 29th, though the release date has been postponed indefinitely as of December 2011.

The Boys sold 227,994 albums just within 12 days in South Korea alone, becoming the best selling album in October and third best selling album thus far in 2011.[91]

It was announced on November 11th that Girls’ Generation would be releasing their first official Japanese photobook titled “Holiday” also the first Japanese concert tour will be available on blu-ray/DVD, which goes on sale December 14th. [92]

Girls’ Generation’s first Japanese photograph collection book ‘Holiday‘ seized the #1 spot on the book sales ranking chart under the photograph collection category. In overall book sales ranks, it ranked at #18.[93] The Girls will participate in 2011 Winter SMTown – The Warmest Gift album with the song “Diamond”. Endorsements

Girls’ Generation performs their single “Chocolate Love” at an LG event. The song is a promotional song for LG’s new Chocolate phone.

During their early career, the group were endorsers for several brands such as Elite Uniform,[95] Nexon Bubble Fighter,[96] Samsung and LG.[97] Since 2008 they have been exclusive models for the Goobne Chicken[98] and have filmed several commercials for the brand, recorded jingles for advertising purposes, and modeled for promotional Goobne calendars as well. Goobne Chicken has since become a strong contender in the chicken industry and attribute their success to the group.[99] By mid-2009 the group members were models for over 10 brands and were chosen as one of South Korea’s most sought after advertisers in a survey conducted by brand consulting research institute.[100] Several members are solo advertising models such as Seohyun who is a model for Clean and Clear and The Face Shop,[101] Taeyeon who models for A-Solution, a cosmetics brand,[102] or Yoona who models for S-Oil[103] and Innisfree.[104] Alongside Super Junior, they are also exclusive models to the partly SM Entertainment-owned retail brand SPAO.[105] Endorsing clothing brands, online games,[106] food industries,[107] events, electronics, cosmetics and even products reserved for the top celebrities to endorse such as petroleum and credit cards, the group was considered one of the most sought after models in 2009.[108]

The group continued to be active in advertising in 2010, endorsing brands and products including the Nintendo DSi[109] and Domino’s Pizza.[110] In late 2010, a gift certificate company began releasing gift certificates each worth 10,000 won which featured Girls’ Generation images on the cards, making them the first celebrities to be featured as such.[111] The Korean web portal Daum also began using the group as models while remodeling certain services and search engines in early October 2010, and released Girls’ Generation desktop wallpapers and screensavers for promotion.[112] A survey conducted in December 2010, saw 409 out of 741 marketing employees choosing Girls’ Generation as the model with the most influence over consumers, attributing their positive attention from the public to their vocals, looks and fashion sense.[113] In 2011, Intel Asia announced that the group would become official advertising models for the company.[114]

Meanwhile, members Yuri, Yoona, Seohyun, Sooyoung and Hyoyeon were models for Christian Dior. Other members which include Yoona and Seohyun were not models for Christian Dior, due to their other cosmetic contracts. Woongjin Coway stated that they selected Girls’ Generation as their exclusive models and recently contracted with the group to endorse their water purifiers. Their contract will begin on March 1 and last through the year, while TV advertisements will begin running mid-March.[115] In March 2011, the group started endorsing the Vita500 brand of energy drinks as part of Vita500’s 10th anniversary[116] and exclusive Vita500 posters of Tiffany, Yuri and Yoona were released.[117]

In Japan, the group is currently endorsing the throat lozenge brand E-ma Nodoame.[118] They endorsed Lipton tea as well, with their songs “Let It Rain” and “MR. TAXI” used as background music.[119] In July 2011, along with labelmates TVXQ, they started endorsing 7-Eleven Japan products featuring the Japanese version of the song “Hoot” in commercials.[120]

On August 19, 2011, Girls’ Generation were chosen as the ambassadors for the 2010-2012 Visit Korea Year.[121] Seohyun will be appointed as UNICEF envoys on October 11, 2011 at Changseong-Dong, Seoul. This is a notable feat, as only those who have a respectable reputation are appointed as goodwill representatives.[122]

On October 2011 Girls’ Generation were appointed models for J.ESTINA.[123]

Diet

In February 2011, Chosun Ilbo reported that band members ate only 1,500 kcal a day.[124] This corresponds to a seasonal vegetable, five pieces of broccoli, 100 grams of grilled chicken breast, and 150 grams of brown rice.[124] Several members of the band hotly denied these claims in a interview in a interview televised by SBS in November.[125] “They say we eat eight brocolli pieces and one sweet potatoe for a meal,” Yuri said.[125] “That’s crazy. I thought they meant we ate 1,500 kcal a meal at first.”[125] According to Tiffany: “I feel like we eat at least 3,000 kcal a day. Our manager told us, ‘The amount of money SNSD spends on food is much greater than the amount Super Junior spends on their meals.”[125]

Philanthropy

On February 4, 2010 SNSD held a donation campaign with music site Lunchbox. In the Music Dream campaign, Netizens will click the “join” button on the site Dosirak and 3% of the purchase price will be accumulated as a reserve. This reserve will be delivered to the donation group, “Korea Make Wish Foundation”.[126]

On April 8, 2011, it has been announced that a portion of the revenue from their Japanese single MR. TAXI / Run Devil Run would be donated to Japan’s Red Cross in order to provide assistance to the victims of the 2011 Tōhoku earthquake and tsunami.[72]

SNSD, f(x), SHINee will be taking part in an effort to help African children. On August 9, 2011 the groups were joined by United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Ban Kimoon in the ‘Help African Children’ project co-organized by the Korean Red Cross Society and the Korean UNICEF committee.[127]

Girls’ Generation will be appearing on the September 17th episode of KBS‘ ‘Love Request‘ to donate blood. Through the program they will invite a girl with a heart condition and a blind boy to fly to Korea to receive treatment. SNSD will also be participating in a blood drive campaign during the show together with Super Junior.[128]

On September 21 was revealed that Woongjin Coway will be holding a “Beautiful Auction” event at Times Square in Yeongdeungpo with female idol group Girls’ Generation on the 27th to help women who are neglected.[129]

SNSD’s member Seohyun released a digital song “Dreams Comes True” together with Donghae on the 11th and proceeds will be donated to UNICEF. The funds will be used to treat children who are suffering in Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, and Djibouti.[122]

TRAX (originally The TRAX) is a South Korean rock band formed in the summer of 2004 by S.M. Entertainment and formerly produced by X Japan‘s co-founder Yoshiki. The name “TRAX” refers to “recording tracks”, but also stands for the first letter of each original member’s stage name, Typhoon of the Rose Attack on X-Mas. Originally a nu metal/rock band, they changed to a straight pop sound when drummer Rose left in 2006

[edit] Pre-debut

In 2000, S.M. Entertainment decided to produce a rock group, which took them four years to materialize.[1] The TRAX members, Typhoon, Rose, and Attack first appeared in the “2002 Survival Audition HeeJun vs. KangTa Battle of the Century” along with TVXQ’s Xiah and Super Junior‘s Sungmin and Eunhyuk.

[edit] 2004–2007

The band made their first public appearance for BoA‘s eleventh single “Rock With You” in December 2003. TRAX held its first concert on July 26, 2004 at Ziller Hall. They were featured in TVXQ‘s first two albums, Tri-Angle and Rising Sun. The band promoted in both South Korea and Japan with mixed success.

In May 2006, the drummer Rose left the band to pursue other interests. The band continued as a trio until 2007, when bassist Attack quietly disappeared from the group.

[edit] 2008–present: Acting activities and comeback

My Goddess, was released on September 6, 2010. Seohyun of Girl’s Generation was featured in the MV of the same title.

They also sang the song “Tell Me Your Love” for KBS’s drama Mary Stayed Out All Night, featuring Moon Geun Young and Jang Geun Seok.

In 2011 X-Mas teamed up with his label mate Heechul of Super Junior for the group M&D. M&D’s first title track “뭘봐 (Close Ur Mouth/What Are You Looking At?)” was released on the June 22 online.

[edit] Career

[edit] 2007: Debut and Cheerful Sensibility

Although F.T. Island’s first album, Cheerful Sensibility, was scheduled to be released commercially in May 2007, the members appeared on the show “Wanna be my girlfriend?” (Korean: 두근두근 여친만들기) on the Korean television channel MNet. The band also performed on stage live at Rolling Hall and held their first official showcase at Live House Melon-AX, Gwangjang-dong in Seoul on May 27, 2007.[3]

On June 7, 2007 the group performed their debut song Love Sick on the music television program M!Countdown; their debut album, Cheerful Sensibility, was released on the same day.

Cheerful Sensibility combined 13 songs that were loosely divided into two parts, “Emotional Chapter” and “F.T. Island Chapter”, according to the genre of the songs.[4] The “Emotional Chapter” consists of rock ballads. The “F.T. Island Chapter” was produced by the Japanese composers who worked with the Japanese band, SMAP and is composed of a variety of pop rock songs.[5]

Selling over 79,000 copies in 2007, it was the sixth best-selling album of the year.[6] The album was re-released on December 3, 2007, titled The Refreshment, with three extra songs, a photobook, a stack of photocards, and a mixing program called Music 2.0 which allows one to adjust the levels of the instruments and vocals. This edition sold 25,724 copies in December 2007.[6]

[edit] 2008: Japanese Debut, Colorful Sensibility, and other activities

After debuting in Korea, FNC Music moved F.T. Island’s activities overseas. On March 31, 2008, an autograph session in Malaysia at the Damansara Cineleisure was held, which was to be follow the next day by the group’s first concert at the Sunway Lagoon Amphitheater.[7] The performance was cancelled, and their first concert was held in Thailand instead, at the Royal Paragon Hall on April 12, 2008. The band performed songs from their album and showcased their individual talents in their solo performances.[8]

F.T. Island’s Japanese debut album, entitled Prologue of F.T. Island, was released on June 7, 2008, with the first single released being Soyogi . The album consists of 8 songs, 2 of which are newer versions of the original songs F.T. Island and Primadonna. The last track, Always Be Mine, is an English version of First Kiss from their debut album (though the lyrics are original). Music videos were also released for Soyogi and Friendship, displaying the band’s professional and youthful sides, respectively.

After their promotional activities in Japan ended, the band returned to Korea to release their second Korean album Colorful Sensibility on August 27, 2008. A follow-up EP, Colorful Sensibility Part 2, was released on October 17, 2008.

Later that year, F.T. Island released The One, their first Japanese commercial single, under an indie label AI Entertainment. The single hit #9 on the Oricon daily charts.[9] F&C Music stated that although other Korean bands utilized the assistance of large Japanese record labels to gain popularity, F.T. Island was able to make it onto the charts without any true marketing efforts.[10] The single also was the last official release with member Oh Won Bin before his departure.[11]

[edit] 2009: New lineup, Jump Up, Cross & Change, and Japanese singles

On January 28, 2009, it was announced that Oh Won Bin would indeed be leaving the group,[12] with FNC trainee Song Seung Hyun joining as a guitarist and backup vocalist.[13] With the new lineup change, F.T. Island released the music video for their mini-album title song “Bad Woman.” They also promoted it on SBS Inkigayo, and two days later, released the band’s first Korean mini-album Jump Up.

On April 22, F.T. Island released their second Japanese single, I believe Myself. For the first time, members participated with lyrics and composition. For the song Moonlight Angel, member Lee Jae Jin co-wrote it and leader Choi Jong Hoon co-composed the song. I Believe Myself is the first Japanese single with member Song Seung Hyun. They held their 2009 F.T. Island Tour-I Believe Myself in cities all over Japan during the summer of 2009.[14]

F.T. Island toured parts of Asia which include Singapore, Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, etc. to promote themselves in the summer of 2009. The showcases kicked off in Singapore during June 25 to 27.[15]

While preparing for overseas promotions, the members were in the midst of recording their third album. On July 9, FNC Music released a jacket photo for the upcoming third album called Cross & Change. On the following day, a musc video teaser was released online, featuring kids watching their idols (played by the members themselves) on TV. The title song, called “I Hope/Barae”, was released on July 16.[16] F.T. Island tried out a variety of music styles for Cross & Change; it includes a total of 12 songs, ranging from moving ballads to addictive songs with a bright melody. F.T. Island adopted a new fashion style and concept for the album, using a “retro” and the so-called “Bokgo” approach, which was inspired during the “jeans jeans look” from the 80s in Korea.[17]

F.T. Island released their 3rd Japanese single, Raining, on October 21, 2009. A music video of the single’s title track was released. Leader Choi Jong Hoon played the piano for the title song instead of the guitar.[18]

F.T. Island’s sub-group: F.T. Triple

The three members Choi Jong Hun, Choi Min Hwan, and Lee Jae Jin formed a sub-group called F.T. Triple. Some of the reasons behind this move were to showcase more of the members’ skills and to prevent lead singer, Lee Hongki, from overstraining his voice again (refer to Gayo Daejun Incident under ‘Headlines’ below). Another reason was to continue promoting F.T. Island while Lee Hongki was busy filming the South Korean drama “You’re Beautiful” and while Song Seunghyun was busy with variety shows. At first, this trio was unofficially announced at the Dream Concert in Japan as “A3”. They almost named themselves A3 because they all are blood A type. They wanted to keep the F.T. name so they added Triple at the end of it to represent that it is a trio. In F.T. triple, Lee Jaejin, originally in charge of bass for F.T. Island, becomes a guitarist and the lead vocalist; leader Choi Jonghun plays the piano and Choi Min Hwan continues to play the drums. Their first single was titled “Love Letter” and was released with F.T. Island’s 2CD Repackaged Album Double Date as a second CD named Two Date that features all F.T. Triple songs.[19]

F.T. Island held a national tour titled, “Men’s Stories”.The national tour began on November 14, 2009 in Seoul, South Korea. Their hit single from the album, I Hope, was very well received by their fans and the five members planned on showing their life behind the stage along with strong visuals and sounds on a more personal level for the fans. For their concert, F.T. Island emphasized their growth as a band as they begin to shed their boyish charms for a more mature and masculine appeal.[20]

[edit] 2010: Major Debut in Japan, Beautiful Journey, and Success in Taiwan

In the months January and February, the boys started touring in Asia. The tour visited Japan, Thailand, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Philippines, and Singapore. Tickets were sold out quickly; representatives of the band believe it was due to the popularity of Lee Hong Ki starring in the drama, “You’re Beautiful”.

After celebrating their 1000th day in the music industry, they flew to Japan and stayed there until the end of August for their major debut in Japan under the combination of new Japanese label company, Warner Music Japan and their official label company, FNC Music. They also began a new Japanese show which began airing starting 7 April 2010.[21] On May 19, 2010, F.T. Island released their new single “Flower Rock” under Warner Music.[22] “Flower Rock” entered the Oricon daily charts at 3rd position on May 19, 2010, the day of its release, and held the fourth position of that week.[23] On July 14, 2010, F.T. Island released another single named “Brand-new days,” which included songs written and composed by the F.T. Island members Song Seung Hyun and Choi Jong Hun. F.T. Island performed a five-city concert tour in Japan after releasing both singles.[24][25] They also performed at the international rock festival “Summer Sonic 2010” in Maishima Arena, Osaka, Japan.[26]

After promotions in Japan, F.T. Island focused on their comeback in Korea in mid-August 2010.[27] Their new mini album “Beautiful Journey” and the music video for their main title song “Love Love Love” were released on August 25, 2010. F.T. Island held their comeback performance in Korean on August 27, 2010. The title song topped many popular music charts in South Korea and also gained international notice, especially in Taiwan.[28] Choi Jong Hoon co-wrote and co-composed one of the songs, titled Don Quixote’s Song, making it the first Korean song that includes the composition from F.T. Island itself. During November and December, F.T. Island balanced two separate concerts, the Beautiful Journey Concert and So Today… Concert, in both Korea and Japan.

While promoting their second Korean mini-album, F.T. Island recorded another Japanese single titled So today… to be released in November. All three songs were co-written by Lee Jae Jin; the song, Boom Boom Boom, was composed by Choi Jong Hoon.[29] The single ranked 6th on the Oricon Daily Chart. With F.T. Island’s 3rd single taking the 6th position, they now have a record of all their singles ranking top 10 in the Oricon charts.[30] About 10,000 fans turned up at their promotional events in Osaka and Tokyo on 20 and 21 November.[31]

Due to their immense popularity in Taiwan, F.T. Island held a concert on December 25, celebrating Christmas together with 9000 fans. F.T. Island is Korea’s first rock band to hold a big scale concert in Taiwan and they had no other special request besides asking for the best sound systems and hardware. Former vocalist and guitarist, honoured guest Oh Wonbin, performed his first single as a solo artist and a brand new song, which has yet not been released, at the concert. F.T. Island performed songs in three languages, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese.[32] Though they have only entered the Taiwan music industry for a short period of 10 months, with an album sales record over 100,000, FT Island won favorable comments in the Chinese media.[33] Just for the concert tickets and merchandises alone, the revenue for FTIsland’s [Beautiful Journey] concert have exceeded a total of NT$20Million. They have been named the Korean artistes who earned the most money for the end of 2010 and FTIsland also wished to visit Taiwan again soon.[34] Four main news agencies namely, China Times, Yonhap News, Apple Daily and Liberty Times, covered news on the concert, showing the band’s high popularity. FT Island also broke several records in Taiwan with 500,000 hits on mobile downloads and 10,000,000 hits on music downloads.[35]

[edit] 2011–present: Five Treasure Island and Return

On April 20, FTIsland released their 4th major Japanese single Satisfaction with accompanying tracks, I want and Friends, in which Choi Jonghun participated in the composition of both songs. The single topped the Oricon Weekly Charts at 2nd place. They were positioned right after Johnny’s Kanjani8. Their title song “Satisfaction” was also selected to be the ending theme song of the current airing anime “Toriko”, generating high expectation from the public.[36]

On May 18, FTIsland released their first major debut album in Japan, titled Five Treasure Island. The album features songs from singles, Flower Rock, Brand New Days, So Today…, and Satisfaction; it also contains several new tracks, including the OSTs for Japanese drama, “Muscle Girl”, in which member Lee Hongki plays lead male role. FTIsland set a record by being the first Korean band to top the Oricon album daily chart at 1st position. Their first Japanese regular album sold 20,410 copies on the first day, attaining the 1st position on the Oricon album daily chart. FTIsland held an album release commemorative event yesterday at Yomiuri Land and shared the joy of their result together with some 5,000 fans. FTIsland started their performance with songs from their past singles and also new album songs like “mirai”, “yume”, “Rock’n’roll”, as well as theme songs “itsuka” and “haruka” from Lee Hongki’s drama, TBS “Muscle Girl”. FTIsland expressed their happiness of attaining the 1st position on the Oricon chart, “It’s unbelievable that we’ve got the 1st position. We will work harder in future to bring even better music. Please give us lots of love and support.”[37]

FTIsland returns to South Korea with mini-album Return. The album was released on May 24 with title track, Hello Hello. The album features five songs, one being I Confess, which leader Choi Jonghun said he wrote with their fans in mind.

[edit] F.T. Island stranded in Cebu

On September 25, 2009, F.T. Island was in Cebu in the Philippines to film the music video for their Japanese single, “Raining”. Due to a sudden typhoon (Typhoon Ketsana), the members were left stranded in the province. Their record company, FNC Music, attempted to communicate with the members, but were unable to reach the band. The typhoon knocked out radio contact and cut off any connection with the crew. The record company was eventually able contact with the crew later in the afternoon and confirmed that F.T. Island was safe. The filming was shortened by a few days and the band flew back to Korea two days later.[38]

[edit] Oh Won Bin’s project with Lee Hongki

Former member Oh Won Bin took part in the soundtrack of drama You’re Beautiful (Hangul: 미남이시네요), in which Lee Hongki costarred in.[39] Along with Miss $, Oh Won Bin sung the cheerful second track titled “하늘에서 내려와 (Coming Down from the Sky)”. Even before the album was released, this particular song has received lots of attention. Won Bin’s participation created many speculations among netizens: he might return to the band, he has projects together with F.T. Island members, a new start of his solo career, or he just wants to support his old band mate. No official comment has been made yet, but Wonbin has been referenced to in FTI’s members’ tweets and photos.[39]

[edit] Dorm fire

On the May 3, 2011, a fire broke out at F.T. Island’s dorm near Munrae-dong, Youngdeungpo-gu, Seoul. The members evacuated immediately and no one was injured. The members had finished their new album recording works and returned home to take a rest when the fire broke out. Representatives of their agency explained, “The members were able to escape to a safe location and call for help. It was not anything major or severe. Rest assured, the members are not injured and do not require a visit to the hospital.” Despite it being a scary situation, the agency thought positively of the fire by calling it a sign of good luck. “The members were up late preparing for their new mini-album’s music video and album jacket photoshoot before returning to their dorms to sleep. As they’ve just released their new album, Satisfaction, we consider this ‘fire’ a sign of good luck.”[40][41]

[edit] Minhwan fainted

On March 23, 2009, second youngest member Minhwan fainted from overwork while waiting to film his drama, “The Way Home.” He was rushed to the hospital and treated. His company said that he had become increasingly tired due to band activities and his drama. Minhwan had also caught a severe cold, and had been overworking himself. Luckily, it wasn’t serious and he was discharged on the 24th.
