SS501 (pronounced as Double-S Five-Oh-One or Deo Beul E Seu Oh Gong Il, Hangul: 더블에스오공일) is a South Korean boy band formed under the management of DSP Media, formerly known as Daesung Entertainment and DSP Entertainment. The group debut in 2005 with five members: Kim Hyun Joong, Heo Young Saeng, Kim Kyu Jong, Park Jung Min and Kim Hyung Jun.

The name of the band is a combination of letters and numbers that have special meaning. The first “S” stands for “Superstar”. The second “S” is an abbreviation for “Singer”. The combination of 5, 0, and 1 symbolizes “five members united as one forever”.[1] SS501’s official fan club name is Triple S (means SSS : Super Star Supporters).

As of June 2010, upon the expiration of group’s contract with DSP Media, all the members have subsequently moved to other management companies, to pursue solo careers, but Kim Hyun Joong, the leader, have stated that they have not disbanded.[2]

[edit] History

[edit] 2005-2006: Debut

SS501 debuted on June 8, 2005 with their first single “Kyeonggo” (Korean: “경고”, “Warning“); a second single, “Snow Prince”, was released in late 2005. The group was inactive in Korea for most of 2006, although they had a fan meeting in Japan in April of that year.[3] The reason was due to Heo Young Saeng’s throat condition, which required a surgery, thus resulting in a need for time to fully recover.[4] In mid-2006, they held their first successful concert, “Step Up Concert” in Osaka, Japan. In late 2006, they returned to Korea in order to promote their first full album, which was released on November 10 and was entitled S.T.01 Now. Singles from the album included “Unlock” and “Four Chance”. As well as promoting the album on various variety and music shows, they also filmed a show on MNet, which was called SOS. The group (excepting Heo Young Saeng, who was recovering from the sugery) also lent their voices for the 2006 animated movie Pi’s Story.[5]

[edit] 2007-2008: Japanese activities, Boys Over Flowers, and Sub-unit

Later in 2007, the group debuted in the Japanese market. A Japanese fan club was established with the name of “Triple S Japan”; it officially debuted on March 25, 2007, when SS501 had their first official meeting with the club. The group at this time released their Japanese single “Kokoro”, alongside multiple versions, including one with all members and five featuring each member individually. The single debuted at #5 on the Oricon chart,[6] and moved to #3 the next day. It was also chosen as an ending theme song for an anime entitled Blue Dragon. A full album was released later that year. SS501 also received the newcomer award in Japan; this was the first time for Korean artists to receive this award.

In 2008, SS501 returned to Korea with their single Deja Vu, which was released on March 8, 2008. The title track was the first song to be promoted, and they began their comeback on music channel M.Net’s M Countdown.[7] After success with their single “Deja Vu”, they began to promote their second single, “A Song Calling for You”. They performed their Goodbye Stage on Music Bank on June 6, 2008, to return to Japanese activities.

On 2 October 2008, leader Hyun Joong was casted as ‘Yoon Ji Hoo’ in the Korean version of Hana Yori Dango, officially named Boys Over Flowers. It was broadcast on KBS in the first half of 2009. On 4 October the group represented Korea to performed and picked up the The Best Asian Artist Award at the 5th Asia Song Festival, organised by Korea Foundation for International Culture Exchange, at the Seoul World Cup Stadium.[8]

With Jung Min, who’s performing in the lead role of ‘Danny Park’ in musical Grease and Hyun Joong on Boys Over Flowers; the remaining three members formed ‘SS501 Project Group’ with Young Saeng as the leader. They released a project album named U R Man in November 2008, with a high tempo dance track “UR Man”. They also contributed to the Boys Over Flowers soundtrack with “내 머리가 나빠서” (Because I’m Stupid), and appeared in episode four of Boys Over Flowers in a cameo prformace of “U R Man”.

[edit] 2009: Mini albums and first Asian tour

SS501 released their official second Japanese album, All My Love , on May 13, 2009. A promotional tour was also held in Japan in support of the album. They later released the album Solo Collection, which consisted of the individual members’ songs. Following its release, the members dissolved into their solo activities.

In July 2009, they reunited to embark on their 1st Asia Tour Persona, with two concerts in Seoul. It was folloed by 15 concerts, in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, China, Malaysia and Singapore.[9]

The group’s mini album Rebirth was released in two parts: in a limited and in a full edition. The former was released on the 20th of October[10][11], the latter on the 22nd. The limited special edition album included two posters and an 100-page photo diary. SS501 promoted the album with the single “Love Like This”; the song went on to win two Music Bank awards and an Inkigayo Mutizen in November. Promotional activities for the album ended on November 29, 2009.

In 2010, SS501 continued their 1st Asia Tour Persona concert in Thailand before holding their final encore concert, on 27 February, in Seoul to conclude the tour.[12] Although the release of their new mini album was planned to be on May 1, 2010 (a nod towards “501” in the group’s name), the date was pushed back in order to “add finishing touches”. They performed at the 2010 Dream Concert later that month. Due to the fact that Kim Hyun Joong was still recovering from a previous injury, they sang two ballads instead of the rumored comeback track. A day after their performance at the Dream Concert, one of their mini album tracks, “Let Me Be The One”, was leaked on the internet. Not long afterwards, the teaser for the comeback track was unveiled. The third mini album, “Destination”, was finally released on May 24, 2010. Their first win for their title track, “Love Ya”, was during their second week of promotion in Music Bank, on June 11, 2010. They also took first place the following week. On June 18, 2010, Daesung Entertainment announced that SS501 would end their “Love Ya” promotions due to contract expiry with DSP on June 7, 2010.

[edit] 2010: Leaving DSP Media

In June 2010, upon the expiration of the group’s contract with DSP Media, all the members then subsequently signed with other management companies. Kim Hyun Joong signed with KeyEast Entertainment in late June.[13] This was followed, in August, by Park Jung Min who joined CNr Media[14] and Kim Hyung Jun with S-Plus Entertainment.[15] Lastly in October Heo Young Saeng and Kim Kyu Jong, both signed with B2M Entertainment.[16]

Although its members signed under different companies, SS501 as of 2011, has retained its name. All of the members’ new companies have stated that SS501’s activities are top priority in their contracts.[17] All members have also stated that the group has definitely not disbanded. Kim Hyun Joong explained in an interview that, at the time, there wasn’t a company that would accepted them as a whole, thus the group decided to take the chance to focus on their solo activities.
